Message Review
The second lesson on how to be rich toward God is “Transfer our trust from our riches to the One who richly provides.” The more we trust God, the immeasurably more God does. He wants to show us His glory, and carry onto completion His Unfinished, transforming work in us. Generosity proves our trust in God, grows our trust in God, and transfers our trust from our riches to the One who richly provides.
Main Point: Generosity proves our trust in God, grows our trust in God, and transfers our trust from our riches to the One who richly provides.
Scripture References: 1 Timothy 6:17 and Matthew 6:19-24
Discussion Questions
What were your initial thoughts or takeaways from the sermon, and why?
If you could ask an extremely wealthy follower of Jesus to do just one thing – and they would actually do it – what would you tell them, and why?
Read what Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-24:
What words or phrases stick out to you in this passage?
What main point(s) was Jesus trying to communicate?
What does it mean to “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (vs 19), and how do we do that?
In vs 24, Jesus said, “You cannot serve both God and money.” Why did Jesus say that? What does it look like to serve God instead of money?
In what ways do you think our pursuit of money impacts our relationship with God?
Read 1 Timothy 6:17:
What main point(s) was Paul trying to communicate in this passage?
What does it practically look like to put our hope in wealth?
What does it practically look like to put our hope in God?
How much money do you think you need to feel secure and at peace?
It’s easy to say we trust God, but when it comes to our finances, how do we know if we actually do?
Answer these questions with a simple yes or no:
Do you have money in the bank, but no peace in your heart?
Is it hard to do the right thing when it costs you financially?
Does your standard of living exceed your level of income?
Are your finances negatively impacting your relationships?
Are you trying to buy your way to happiness by purchasing things you can’t afford?
Does the fear of not having enough impede your willingness to give generously?
Does your spending govern your giving?
As Ronnie said, if you answered “yes” to any of those questions, it’s an indication you might be trusting in money instead of God. What next step might Jesus be inviting you to take to transfer your trust from being in money to being in Him?
How does generosity prove our trust in God, grow our trust in God, and transfer our trust from our riches to the one who richly provides?
As you’ve been asking God what He would have you do in response to Unfinished, are you sensing Jesus prompting you to follow Him in any specific way? How can we pray for you?
