Message Review

Sunday was week 4 of a 5-part series entitled “Miracles?”. Throughout this series we’re answering 7 questions about miracles. This week we answered the 6th question, “What do I do when I don’t get one?” We discovered when you don’t get the miracle you asked for, pivot toward God.

Main Point | When you don’t get the miracle you asked for, pivot toward God

Focus Passages | Matthew 11:1-19

Discussion Questions:

  • What were your initial thoughts or takeaways from the sermon, and why?

  • Has experiencing “positive circumstances” impacted your faith in God? If so, how and why?

  • Has experiencing “negative circumstances” impacted your faith in God? If so, how and why?

  • Have you ever prayed for a miracle you didn’t get? What was your response, and why?

  • Who is John the Baptist and what was significant about him? (if needed, see: Luke 1:13-17, 39-45; Matthew 3:1-6, 13-17; John 1:29-34)

Read Matthew 11:1-19:

  • What stands out to you in this passage?

  • Based on John’s relationship with Jesus, does his circumstances (imprisoned) surprise you?  Why?

  • In verse 3, why does John ask Jesus this question? Based on what you know about John, why would he ask Jesus this question?

  • In verses 4-6, what was Jesus communicating to John in his response?

  • When Jesus says, “Blessed is anyone who does not stumble [pivot away from, lose faith in, God] on account of me” (vs 6), what surprises you, if anything, about this response?

  • What would make Jesus’s response hard for John to accept?

  • What does it mean to be blessed by God?

  • Is being blessed dictated by our external circumstances? Why or why not?

  • What main point(s) was Jesus communicating in verses 16-17?

  • Does it surprise you Jesus didn’t miraculously intervene and save John from prison? Why?

  • What are some potential reasons why God doesn’t give us a miracle we’re asking for?

  • Is it hard for you to accept that God may not give you the miracle you’re asking for? Why?

  • As followers of Jesus, what should our response be when we don’t get the miracle we’re praying for?

Ronnie said, “When you don’t get the miracle you asked for, pivot toward God.

  • What does that mean?

  • Why does God want that be our response?

  • How do we pivot toward or away from God when we don’t get the miracle we asked for?

  • Is Jesus enough for you, or is another miracle necessary for your faith and faithfulness in Him? How do you know?

  • How can our group pray for you?
