In Week 1 of our “Before You Go” series, we addressed the first tension people have left our church over. We learned Communion is an important and powerful time to remember Jesus’ sacrifice, self-examine our relationship with Him and one another, and praise Him for who He is and what He has done. We should be more concerned with the manner in which we take Communion than when, where, or how often we take it.

• What were your initial thoughts or takeaways from the sermon, and why?

• What comes to mind when you think about Communion?

• What do you believe Communion is? Why do you believe that?

• When, where, and how often do you believe Communion should be taken? Why do you believe that? 

• Have you experienced any internal tension that Relevant does not do Communion during Sunday gatherings? If so, why?

  • What is the context of this passage?

  • What did Jesus say the bread and cup represent, and what did he mean by that?

  • What was the significance of Jesus saying these words during the Jewish annual Passover meal

  • What words or phrases stand out to you in this passage, and why?

  • What problem was Paul addressing in verses 17-22, and why was he addressing it?

  • Why did Paul say, “when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat” (vs 20)?

  • Why did the division and selfishness in the Corinthian church contradict the meaning of the Lord’s supper?

  • How do we take Communion in an unworthy manner (vs 27)?

  • According to verse 29, why does the manner in which we take Communion matter?

• Do you ever struggle with making Communion a priority and not just going through the motions?

• When you take Communion, do you ever struggle with just going through the motions instead of using that time to intentionally remember, self-examine, and praise? If so, why?  Why should we be more concerned with the manner in which we take Communion than when, where, or how often we take it?

• When you take Communion, are you taking it in a worthy manner? How do you know?

• If God reveals sin, division, unforgiveness, or a broken relationship as you self-examine, what would it look like to respond in surrender?
