Message Review

One of our goals as a church is every person who is part of Relevant is fully engaged in serving on a team at Relevant. One of the primary reasons for that goal is because the impact of serving is transformational. The impact of serving transforms you, transforms our church, and, most importantly, helps transform the world through our church (the reason Jesus created His Church).

Main Point: The impact of serving helps transform the world through our church.

Discussion Questions

  • What were your initial thoughts or takeaways from the sermon, and why?

  • Based on how you were raised or what you were taught, what is the church and why does it exist? What brought you to that conclusion? 

  • Read Matthew 16:13-20:

    • What words or phrases stick out to you in this passage?

    • Why did Jesus ask His disciples, “who do you say I am?” in verse 15?

    • What was significant about Peter’s answer in verse 16?

    • What big idea(s) was Jesus communicating in verses 17-18?

    • The first time the word “church” shows up in the New Testament is in verse 18.  The Greek word translated as “church” in English is “Ekklesia”, which means a community of people united by a common identity and purpose. How is that different than how many people think of church?

  • Read Acts 1:8:

    • Who was Jesus talking to in this passage?

    • What main point(s) was Jesus trying to communicate in this passage?

    • When did Jesus say these words and what is the significance of that?

  • According to Jesus’ words in Matthew 16:13-20 and Acts 1:8, why did Jesus create His church?

  • Ronnie said, “The church is a people who are the Body of Christ, and Jesus created His church to carry on His mission of transforming the world for Him.” 

    • Does that definition change how you’ve defined church? If so, how?

    • What does this definition of church mean for every follower of Christ?

    • What does this definition of church mean for Relevant Community Church?

  • How do we (Relevant) practically carry on Jesus’ mission of transforming the world together?

  • Ronnie said, “The impact of serving helps transform the world through our church.” How does God use each of us serving on a team at Relevant to help transform the world for Him?

  • How are you helping to carry on Jesus’ mission of transforming the world through our church?

    • If you aren’t currently serving on a team, what’s stopping you?
