June 09-15 • Blessed are Those Who Mourn
The phrase #blessed has flooded social media posts everywhere but doesn’t depict the true meaning of the word blessed as God intended. Being blessed by God is a real thing and means true life that can only come from God Himself. God desires to bless our lives when we live according to His will. So how do we do that exactly? Jesus taught the key to living a blessed life. Last week we studied that those who are poor in spirit are blessed. This week, we take a look at mourning and what it means to turn to God in the midst of our pain.
Main Point: God blesses those who turn to Him in the midst of their pain.
What are some ways that you comfort others in their mourning?
When is the last time that you turned to God in the midst of your pain? How did you experience His life giving comfort?
Many times, when we are in the midst of pain, we turn to self-medication, isolation, making purchases, replacing our losses, blaming, or avoidance. Do you recognize yourself currently indulging in any of these “pain killers” or have you in the past? How is/has this affected your situation in the midst of mourning?
As we learned on Sunday, we turn to God through prayer, proclaiming God’s promises, asking others to come alongside us and help us, and pouring out ourselves into who or what God cares about most. How do you need to turn to God in the midst of your pain?
Pastor Ronnie said, “The source of God’s comfort is God’s spirit in us.” If you are a follower of Jesus, the Holy Spirit already resides in you and comforts your soul in the midst of your pain. If you are not a follower of Jesus but have questions or are ready to make that commitment of faith, ask this group to pray with you now! As a group, take some time to pray together and comfort one another.
Next Step Challenge
When you turn to God in the midst of your pain, you will experience God’s blessings in the depths of your soul. You will experience God’s comfort, His joy and happiness, even in your deepest pain. In your mourning, may you say, “It is well with my soul.” Would you consider turning to God instead of something or someone else today?
