May 19-25 • Going Public
There are many ideas and opinions about baptism, but what did Jesus say about it? Although different churches baptize in different ways, the one thing that all Christian churches have in common is our belief that baptism is really important. Jesus’ last recorded words on earth were to “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). If you haven’t yet been baptized and you are a follower of Jesus, would you consider obeying Jesus’ command and getting baptized?
Main Point: Baptism is a public declaration of faith in Jesus. It’s evidence of salvation, not a requirement for it.
Our upbringings often shape our opinions about baptism. What did you grow up believing about baptism?
Share your baptism story if you’ve been baptized. If you haven’t yet been baptized, what’s stopping you?
Read Matthew 28:19 and discuss what it means to “go and make disciples of all nations.” Why is baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit necessary?
On Sunday, Pastor Ronnie shared two questions that people always ask about getting baptized at Relevant: Do I have to be re-baptized? And do I have to do the video? What questions about baptism do you still need answered?
Have you put your faith in Jesus and have you been baptized? If so, how are you helping make more disciples of Jesus and encouraging them to be baptized? If you’re answer is no, are you ready to make the decision to follow Jesus and declare Him as your Lord and Savior? Would you allow this group to have the privilege of praying with you now?
Next Step Challenge
If you are a follower of Christ and have not been baptized, what’s keeping you from making that decision? We pray that this week you will make the decision to get baptized as a public declaration of your faith in Jesus. If you have been baptized already as a follower of Jesus, who in your life do you feel the Holy Spirit leading you to have a conversation about baptism?
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19
