We are all guilty of sinning. One of the most destructive sins is lying because it relationally divides us with one another and with God. When we are confronted with a gap that has been created, choosing to tell the truth can heal broken relationships and mend hurting ones. When we choose to tell the whole truth, we prove we are trustworthy and honor God. Gaps will be created, but trust is the glue that can close those gaps.

Main Point: When you confront me about a gap I’ve created, I will tell you the truth.

Discussion Questions

  1. How are your current relationships holding up? What is making the healthy relationships stay healthy? What is hurting the unhealthy relationships?

  2. Do you remember the first lie you ever told? What were the consequences of that lie?

  3. Read the following verses: Acts 5:3, John 8:44-45, and John 10:10 and contrast the language of Satan and the truth spoken by Jesus. Do you tend to be someone who tells the whole truth or soften the truth? Which situations are more difficult to tell the truth?

  4. Pastor Ronnie discussed on Sunday that embellishing the truth, leaving out the whole truth, and not owning the truth are all forms of lying. What steps will you make to stop lying and tell the whole truth when confronted with gaps?

  5. Take some time in your group now to confess of telling lies or believing lies and asking the Lord to help you believe His truth. Pray for one another in smaller groups for any relational gaps to be healed through truth telling. Ask the Lord for wisdom and courage to tell the truth and for discernment to recognize the lies of the enemy.

Next Step Challenge

Satan wants to divide our relationships through lies. When we choose to lie to others, we ultimately lie to God, creating a vertical gap. In order to close this gap, we have to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Will you commit to telling the truth when you’re confronted about a gap you’ve created?

Key Verse

“Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” – Acts 5:4
