The Dirty Truth
February 17 - 22 • Week 2: Shallow Heart

The condition of our hearts determines how we relate to God, and this is the dirty truth. Jesus told The Parable of the Soils to illustrate how our hearts can be compared to different types of dirt, ready or not to receive good seed—His Word. This week we focused on the hearts that resemble shallow soil. These hearts are ready to receive the Word and do so with great enthusiasm, but when circumstances become difficult, these people withdraw because the shallow soil of their hearts did not allow God’s Word to take root in their lives.

Main Point: We can grow deep roots in our relationship with God and overcome hardship by letting Him change the way we think.

Discussion Questions

  1. How has your heart been this past week? Were there times that you noticed your heart hardening or softening?

  2. How has faith sustained you through a difficult situation, or how has lack of faith influenced a particular circumstance?

  3. Open your Bibles and read Romans 12:2. How does renewing your mind empower you to grow deeper roots of faith? What does not conforming to the world’s patterns look like in your life?

  4. On Sunday Andy shared a story about his friend, Ann, who suffered the tragic loss of her daughter. However, in the midst of her pain and grief, she dug deep into who God is and profoundly declared, “God is good.” How would this practice of digging deep into who God is change your life?

  5. Is there a situation in your life that’s causing you to doubt or waiver in your faith in Jesus? In your group, lift up one another in prayer asking the Lord to transform you by renewing your mind with His Word. Commit to believing what is in His Word as you pray.

Next Step Challenge

If you’ve never given your life to Jesus, asking Him to be the forgiver of your sins and leader of your life, what’s the hardship in your life that’s causing you to not accept God’s message of grace and hope? If you’re ready now, tell your group who will pray and celebrate with you. If you have made this decision to follow Jesus, then where do you see Him leading you from a shallow heart to one with deep roots in faith? Share with your group and follow up with one another this week.
